To celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month this May, I posted a Jewish kidlit recommendation set in an American location each day on Facebook. The Length of a String by Elissa Brent Weissman is a contemporary middle grade novel about Black Jewish Imani, who finds a new way to connect with her adoptive family through her great grandmother's diary recording her flight from Nazi-occupied Europe.

Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon is an enemies-to-lovers contemporary young adult novel, and a love letter to Seattle.

May is also #CanadianJewishHeritageMonth! Lessons in Fusion by Primrose Madayag Knazan is a young adult novel set during the COVID-19 quarantine, in which a Jewish Filipinx girl enters a reality TV cooking contest.

Tia Fortuna's New Home by Ruth Behar is a picture book about love between generations in a Sephardic Cuban Jewish family.

When the Hurricane Came by Nechama Liss-Levinson is a middle grade novel about a Jewish girl whose family must relocate to Memphis after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Bonus: a very early podcast (with poor sound quality, but fascinating content) on the same book, pre-publication.

Cool for the Summer by Dahlia Adler is a sweet queer young adult romcom featuring two Jewish girls.

The Singer and the Scientist by Lisa Rose is a historical picture book about the friendship between Jewish scientist Albert Einstein and Black singer Marian Anderson.

All-of-a-Kind Family Hanukkah by Emily Jenkins is a warm and cozy historical picture book based on the chapter book series by Sydney Taylor. 

May 31, 2022 VALLEY FORGE, PENNSYLVANIA

Hanukkah at Valley Forge by Stephen Krensky (recently re-issued) is a historical picture book based on a true incident when General George Washington learned about the story of the Maccabees from a Jewish soldier.
