Casual Jewish Representation

We tend to use the word "diverse" to describe characters who are not at the top of our caste system, in other words, characters who diverge from the default of white male Christian cisgender heterosexual neurotypical able-bodied people. Books that include "casual diversity" or "casual representation" are those in which diverse characters appear in a story that is not about diversity.

Here is a list of kidlit titles which include Jewish characters but do not focus on Jewish culture or religion, in other words, casual Jewish representation. Representation may range from the mere inclusion of a Jewish name or a single illustration of someone wearing a kippah to portrayal of Jewish life cycle events or holidays, but in each case, the story does not rely on the Jewish identity of the characters.

Casual Jewish representation in youth literature is important as a mirror and as a window (as defined by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop in 1990). Jewish readers feel validated when they see Jewish characters like themselves participating in the life of the larger community. Non-Jewish readers are reminded that Jews are an integral part of the fabric of our society. All readers benefit from the enrichment of stories that reflect the reality of our multicultural world.

The bibliography may be amended as new titles are published. FYI, I have not read all of these books and can't vouch for them. Thank you to the members of the Jewish Kidlit Mavens group on Facebook who suggested many of these titles. Where possible, I've included IndieBound or Bookshop affiliate links that benefit The Book of Life Podcast. If you are aware of additional titles please post a comment or send me an email. The list is alphabetical by author.

There's nothing "casual" about having your child wear a kippah in the world we live in. Antisemitism is at an all-time high. Parents who teach their young children to wear kippot know that it identifies them as Jews on the playground, in a supermarket and walking around town. A kippah can make you an easy target. But for the modern orthodox, kids who wear kippot, as well as for the females in their families who don't, seeing a child in a book with a kippah makes them feel like they too have a right to be part of the World. They belong.
There's nothing "casual" about that. Would you call it casual representation to see a girl wearing a hijab, or a boy wearing a dastar/turban? Seeing Jews in literature, ALL kinds of Jews isn't "casual". It's a choice. One that makes Jewish kids feel seen and validated. And it fills them with a little joy too. Calling a kippah “casual representation” feels dismissive to me. I try to respect the choices of others. I hope others will do the same for me and those I love.
I felt the need to write this because my book --Our Class Is A Country is included on this list of books. Getting the publisher to included a child who looks like every other child--except with a kippah, wasn't easy.
But it will always be important.
Andria, please read the definition at the top of the list. You will see that "casual" is not meant dismissively, and I agree that this representation is extremely important. That's why I compiled this list. Using the definition above of "casual representation," it would apply equally to representation showing a hijab or turban, in a book that was not specifically about those communities. Please don't be put off by the terminology.
Heidi, casual is defined as occurring by chance, unpremeditated, unplanned, informal. This is what comes to most people's minds when they hear "casual", no matter how you define it. Maybe random, or arbitrary would have been a better choice.
Andria, I did not invent this term. I am using the common parlance that is being used in the kidlit world. Please see https://scbwimithemitten.blogspot.com/2021/07/equity-inclusion-corner-what-is-casual.html, for example.
